Safe through times of crisis - tuomi sails around corona cliffs

Corona has shown us all painfully how fast it can go. And how difficult it is to prepare for the massive economic consequences of a lockdown, or even more so to cope with them once the situation has arisen.

It pains us to see how museums, freelance cultural workers, but also service providers for the arts and cultural sector suffer from the situation and in some cases have to fight for their existence. Unfortunately, there have already been reports of the first museum closures, and one can hardly imagine what the budgets of museums will look like in the coming years. Reports on the plight of e.g. tour guides and others are legion, but the service providers are also suffering. Exhibition stand builders, event technicians (Sennheiser is cutting 650 jobs worldwide, for example) are fighting for survival. Service providers who specialise in the digital extension of the museum experience are also in trouble. One example is museuminabox in London. Hopefully not too many others will follow. 

Those who work in or for the cultural sector have to bring along a maximum of idealism and heart and soul, otherwise the numerous obstacles and restrictions (specially financial and administrative ones) are hardly bearable. But now things are getting really difficult.

We at tuomi are of course also noticing how the Corona measures are affecting our museum partners. Now that the museums have been reopened, the number of loaners is limited, and media stations and hands-on stations were at least temporarily inaccessible. New installations on site were postponed, as were exhibition openings.

Whether museums will be able to afford the purchase of new media guide systems in the near future cannot yet be assessed.

For us service providers, this situation means great uncertainty. On the one hand, museums will continue to expand their digital services in order to be better prepared for such situations as in the past months, but whether they will have sufficient financial and personnel resources to do so - who knows.tuationen wie in den vergangenen Monaten vorzubereiten, aber ob sie ausreichende finanzielle und personelle Möglichkeiten dazu haben werden – wer weiß.

We at tuomi are in the incredibly fortunate position that our company has rested on numerous pillars for many years. (More about this on our Website.)

  1. For 25 years tuomi has established itself in the areas of IT services and network technology. We advise and support international customers in all IT matters.
  2. Software development and cloud applications are among our core competencies. Especially in the area of NFC applications we have a great deal of know-how.
  3. We successfully develop projects for well-known customers like the Bitburger brewery group. These projects are continued independently of corona restrictions.
  4. Together with our strong partners we have been developing creative solutions in ever new application areas for many years, which are enjoying increasing popularity. Often projects for different industries result in suggestions, e.g. for our museum sapps.
  5. E-health is an important growth market. With our future-oriented projects with international partners, we are part of it. We are currently in the process of obtaining ISO 13485 certification for our medical software developments. Of course, the criteria certified there by TÜV apply to all our software products, including dorengo.

 

Always there for you

These few points alone indicate that tuomi is crisis-proof. Throughout all the "Corona months" we were in the happy position of being able to work "normally" (albeit in the home office and via video conference).

Our museum clients can also benefit from this. We were and still are approachable without restriction and have also used the time to further develop ourselves and our services, in other words, we have been able to invest further in dorengo. One example is our new website www.dorengo.com . But we have also been working in the background and have further developed and optimised dorengo in many ways.

In recent weeks we have continued to implement new projects. At the Bauhaus Pottery Museum in Dornburg, a new multimedia guide was developed that was actually intended to run on loan devices and the visitors' own end devices. The borrowed devices were not allowed to be handed out, but the version for the own smartphone is running. The children's audio guide, which was developed by pupils and implemented with our system in a very easy way, is particularly beautiful

A micro project was implemented in the city museum Simeonstift Trier. Even the smallest projects can be implemented quickly and cost-effectively with dorengo. After the reopening of the museums there, the special exhibition is once again open to the public, so we set up an NFC tablet station in the Stadtmuseum to present changing videos every two weeks.

The blind kit in the Stadtmuseum Trier, an innovative offer for visitors with visual impairments, was also quickly and easily updated and expanded. As soon as the new tactile objects are available, the current kit for the blind will also be launched.

A further project will be completed shortly, i.e. the installation will be completed. More about this soon.

A stable and dynamic basis

But we are of the opinion that we cannot rest on our laurels. With dorengo we have created a flexible, versatile basis that will allow us to continue to develop. We have developed some ideas that we are currently testing and hopefully will be able to present soon. Digital information media must be further developed in such a way that they can always be adapted to new situations.

But what good are the best ideas if a company cannot hold its own in the crisis? For customers, too, the question then arises as to what will happen to products already purchased. Software is only as good as its continuous maintenance, secure data hosting and professional support. 

Since we can guarantee all these points in our company, we feel well prepared even in the crisis.
